Challenging questions, high impact work, fun people!

Are you excited by the issues at the intersection of AI, data, and law? Luminos.Law is a boutique law firm based in Washington, D.C. dealing primarily with corporate clients who develop, procure, sell, or operate algorithmic and advanced analytics systems, including Generative AI and Machine Learning based products and services. We also do limited work with US Government agencies, and some non-profit or foundation organizations.

Our firm is hiring a data scientist to help our clients identify, design, evaluate, and monitor their AI models – from product design to deployment and all points of data collection and management.  In this position, you’ll help craft technically-sound AI and data governance practices and test whether companies have effectively implemented model validation, bias mitigation, deidentification, and other quantitative methods of assessing AI integration into commercial products and services. You’ll be working as part of a team including both other data scientists and lawyers to support a broad range of efforts at the intersection of technology and law. Close collaboration and strong communication are central to our work, in addition to a deep understanding of the statistical and technical requirements of AI engineering.

Professional development opportunities and career advancement will be available for those who succeed in this environment. Opportunities for publishing work and/or public speaking will be strongly encouraged and provided for those interested.

This is a 100% remote position; willingness to work in general alignment with an East Coast workday is encouraged. Salary range will be $110k - $160k depending on experience and skills. We offer generous healthcare benefits, vacation plans, and 401k options.

We look forward to having you as part of our team!

Key Skills and Position Requirements

  • 3-5 years experience in a quantitative field such as mathematics, engineering, computer science, or economics.
  • BA/BS required, MS or PhD also encouraged to apply; responsibilities and compensation will be commensurate with training and experience.
  • Coding experience for statistical/scientific analysis (Python preferred).
  • A commitment to the ethical use of AI systems, and willingness to develop practical tools to help companies use this technology responsibly.
  • Intellectual curiosity and excitement to find innovative ways to apply statistical and quantitative analysis to the legal and policy assessments of AI-based services.
  • The ability to effectively and clearly communicate the results of your work, and the desire to learn and integrate understanding of legal standards around technological systems.

Desired Skills

  • Any direct experience with AI/ML development, model audits, red-teaming of Generative AI systems, or other hands-on design or operational time with related systems strongly preferred.
  • The ability to balance independent work and close collaboration; strong initiative and creative approaches to new situations and challenges is a plus.
  • Work well remotely, understanding the need for clear and effective communications and working within project-based teams.
